Having an Open Heart

November Theme: Open Heart

When we see that in our life, we have received far more than what we deserve or are capable of, then gratitude draws in us. We become thankful, complaints disappear and abundance grows. A person who is grateful never experiences a lack of anything. “When gratitude in you stays, that very gratitude flows out of you as grace.” - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, global humanitarian and spiritual teacher

Gratitude is a habit and a gesture of the heart, so to compliment this theme, classes will be building toward “heart opening” poses. We will be building strength in our backs in order to support the process of opening our hearts and breathing into that space that is often protected. Whether that protection is conscious or unconscious, we live in a culture of hovering over computers, phones, tablets and the process of intentionally straightening our backs and exposing our heart space can get lost. Opening our hearts and practicing showing gratitude has been shown to help support our overall mental health. Practicing yoga is a tangible way to thank our bodies for carrying us through our day to day lives.

This month’s classes will open either seated or standing to warm up, build toward standing postures and end with poses lying down to help cool the body. There will be a combination of strength building, exploration and relaxation. There will be breath work, guided meditations, and some classes will end with restorative poses.

UBUNTU WOMEN'S INITIATIVE

One class a month will be specifically designed to promote overall women’s health. We will focus on relaxing the pelvic floor, relieving menstrual cramps, and regulating energy. Your money paid for this class will be donated to The Nourish Foundation, specifically their women’s livelihood development program, Ubuntu Women. Ubuntu is an African philosophy that speaks to compassion and humanity at its very core. I am because you are. Nourish foundation was founded in 2011 by my sister-in-law, Sarah Bergs. It is located in rural South Africa and assists women in having access to sanitary pads so they do not have to miss school or work, or use other non-sanitary items such as newspaper or leaves. Nourish “believes every girl has the right to develop confidence, have positive self esteem and feel safe in her village. Through this project we create a space where girls are supported through a series of programs around sexual health, menstruation, confidence and self defense.”
