Mental Health Therapist
Heather Woods, LMHC, RPT is a mental health therapist at our Covington, Indiana clinic. She works with clients ages 4 to 18 and will do family therapy upon request. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Indiana State University. Heather has a strong desire to help others and to be a source of emotional support for those who are navigating challenges within their lives. Her areas of interest related to mental health counseling include but are not limited to trauma, attachment, and mood disorders.
Registered Play Therapist & Other Certifications
As a registered play therapist, Heather has extensive experience in working with children and adolescents and she is very passionate about play therapy and the power of play! “I believe in working with both children and their caregivers within the therapeutic process to promote change and instill hope during the healing process,” states Heather.
Her time working with youth started in graduate school and continued as she worked within the school system for the past 8 years while leading a school-based behavioral health program. In addition, Heather worked with a youth center providing individual and group services to preschool-aged children. Heather also has Level One certification in Theraplay and Marschak Interaction Method and she is EMDR trained.
Heather’s approach to therapy
“Therapy should be a place where you feel safe, heard, and validated. I like to gain an understanding of all aspects of a client’s life to better help them through their therapeutic journey,” shares Heather. She incorporates Child-Centered Play Therapy, Theraplay techniques, relaxation techniques, mindfulness techniques, emotion regulation skills, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and other modalities based upon the needs of the client.
What is it like working with Heather
Heather believes that early intervention is key in helping children and adolescents. She also believes in creating a safe, warm environment for all clients in which they feel heard. Instilling safety and trust with clients is very important to her within the therapeutic process. Heather enjoys helping clients with trauma, adjustment issues, attachment concerns, depression, anxiety, behavioral concerns, low self-esteem, and relationship difficulties.
Other Passions
In her free time Heather enjoys spending free time with family and friends. She also enjoys crafting, decorating, listening to music/attending concerts, learning new things, and playing with her dog.
