Paula Koelbl, LPC
Individual, Couples, and Family Counselor
Paula completed her B.S. degree in Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and her M.A. in Counseling from Northwestern University. Her areas of interest include individual, couples, and family therapy in dealing with challenges such as stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, personal development, relationships, communication, conflict resolution, and parenting at our Mahomet location.
Her approaches to therapy include Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), the Gottman Method, and Integrative Family Therapy (IFT). She often finds it helpful to initially focus on attachment and early childhood experiences as a type of blueprint for her clients since these experiences can play a major role in our beliefs, thought patterns, and how we respond to the world around us. She is also very interested in neurobiology, how our experiences and interactions with others can affect the wiring in our brain, and how these neuropathways can be rewired through psychotherapy.
How Paula helps Two Roads’ Clients
She believes in a holistic approach to therapy and consider the client's physical health as a part of their wellness. In 2017, she completed the personal training program through Parkland College and is a Certified Personal Trainer with the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She like to use her knowledge of biology, nutrition, physiology, and exercise psychology to support the overall wellness of her clients.
She offers Christian counseling and recognize the importance of spirituality in the health and wellness of her clients. She is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors and has completed the Caring for People God's Way program. If desired, she can approach clients' concerns by integrating research-based therapy with a faith-based, biblical perspective.
Paula is an animal lover and previously included her Golden Retriever, Murphy, in therapy before he passed away. In the future, she hopes to train another dog to work alongside her as an Emotional Support Animal.
