Mind-Body-Spirit—A True Wellness Model

Mind, Body Spirit Connection

The phrase—Mind, Body and Spirit conjures up many different thoughts, feelings and interpretations. It is a phrase that I live by and a phrase that embodies so many different aspects in our lives. It is said that “many good things come in threes” and this is just one example.

Other things that come to mind would be The Trinity, Three Little Pigs, Three Wise Men and the Three Ring Circus. The unique aspect of Mind, Body and Spirit is often thought of as three separate entities, but really we also should look at them not as mutually exclusive, but rather each component feeding and nurturing the other.

What does Mind, Body and Spirit really mean?

On a surface level, it pertains to an individual’s mental, physical and emotional/spiritual health. Each individual component affects the other and often in a manner that is not predictable nor completely understood. For example, things that can trouble a person mentally or emotionally can manifest physical symptoms. The heart rate elevates, you begin to sweat more or you lack the ability to sleep because you keep thinking about the problem—and you begin to feel lethargic, fatigued or unmotivated to move. This throws off your Mind-Body-Spirit connection. Conversely, when the mind is relaxed and at ease, you are happier, kinder and more grateful. Physically, you are more relaxed and motivated to do tasks like moving, being active and taking on more of what comes at you.

Keeping a healthy mind, body and spirit

A person with a healthy mind keeps the brain exercised and works at keeping worry and stress at bay. Positive thoughts of joy, peace and gratitude are present and you are able to increase the brain’s capacity for knowledge, understanding and learning. Think of the brain as a muscle that needs both rest and the ability to wonder and ponder.

A person with a healthy body is free of pain, illness and disease. The body is influenced by exercise, what you eat and practicing good habits. What you put into your body, how you move your body and what you think of your body all play a role in maintaining a healthy physical vessel.

A person with a healthy spirit is centered and realizes that they are part of something bigger than themselves. Different methods of enhancing your spirit is to be a part of a community, to give back to others and to “do the right thing” without expecting anything in return.

A Wellness Center focused on the mind, body, spirit connection

Two Roads Wellness Clinic is the embodiment of the Mind-Body-Spirit interface. Each year of growth has brought an added wellness approach to where it is now—mental health, physical therapy, nutrition, massage, primary care and life coaching. Each unique discipline can stand on its own to improve your life but often it has to be done at different facilities and under different philosophies. Two Roads Wellness Clinic has chosen to take the strength of each discipline and marry that together for a wholistic approach to health care; one that is unique in our current health care model.

How traditional and integrative differ

A traditional model of health may focus heavily on medicine and prescribing the “magic bullet”. As you might have experienced in any recent health care appointment, the visits are short and the exchange of communication is lacking. A traditional physical therapy appointment may give you a hand-out of exercises in an open gym and return to check-in on you. A traditional mental health appointment may not hear the other aspects in your life that can affect how you feel--pain, difficulty with managing your health or inability to find ways at relaxing. Two Roads Wellness Clinic is able to truly understand the benefits of each discipline and how each one acting alone can benefit all by acting together.

This blended model to wellness we call integrative health is truly a unique approach and one that Two Roads Wellness Clinic is happy to provide. In a day and age that focuses on the symptoms and just treatment, our organization is focused on the prevention and active participation of improving your health. We take to heart the importance of each component that affects your well-being and the interaction the pieces have on the whole. Do not think of it as “one stop shopping” but a method to regain control over your life in a true Mind-Body-Spirit journey.

We would like to connect with you to discuss your overall wellness. Send us a message.
