Rise Above with Positive Reframing

Three teens using creative expression and expressive arts

How to make positive decisions

I remember as a young child, one of my favorite memories was attending MLB games with my father and grandfather. As a proud Chicago White Sox fan, I remember the baseball field being a favorite summer destination. Now that baseball season is in full swing, I am reminded of a policy that is posted in the stadium and on the seating, encouraging fans to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, despite their surroundings.

This is a theme that has been coming into session with a lot of teens and young adults when facing world issues and mental health challenges. So many things impact our thoughts and decision making. Positive reframing can help us to avoid so many issues if we take the time to assess the situation and determine what ALL of our options are. What are the issues you are facing currently that the resolution of “Rise Above” might support you in making a positive decision?

Here are some suggestions on ways to utilize positive reframing to get control and “rise above.”

Depression

  • Positive Self-Talk.

  • Exercise.

  • Find a friend to entrust with your feelings.

  • Create a safety plan to utilize if necessary.

Anxiety

Decision Making

  • Challenge the reality of the fear/worry.

  • Establish a safe space to sort through anxious thoughts and feelings.

  • Utilize activities that increase brain stimulation to distract from the anxious feelings.

Peer Pressure

  • Report to a trusted adult if something wrong is going on.

  • If you’re unsure, most likely the answer should be no.

  • Establish healthy ways to express feelings toward unwanted behaviors/activities.
